A-Z April 2013 Challenge: Twin Towers

This is part of the April 2013 A-Z Challenge.  Enjoy!

It was cold and bright that morning on September 11, 2001.  Students rushed in speaking of unimaginable events.  A plane hit the Twin Towers.  Ridiculous.  Or so I thought.  Time was a blur, helping students to reach their parents.  I was one of the last to leave the school.  Walked to the Staten Island Ferry.  Acrid smoke in the air.  Hard to breathe.  Dust and ash on my clothes and shoes.  So tired and thirsty.  I was the last person to reach home that night.  But at least I was able to go home that day.  So many did not.

A-Z April 2013 Challenge: Illness

This is part of the April 2013 A-Z Challenge.  Enjoy!

Hi all.  This post is bittersweet.  I tried to do the challenge and even had the first week set up beforehand.  However, I find that I presently can't keep up with the commenting and general upkeep of the blog.  I've been ill for some time now.  I'm trying to manage my diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma.  It's difficult to strike a balance between home, work, school and writing.  So for now, I must put blogging on the back-burner.  Once I'm done with school and work settles down, I can resume the pleasure of blogging.  Until then my friends, peace and long life.

*This isn't really a drabble as it is three words over but meh.

A-Z April 2013 Challenge: Green Vineyard at Ithaca

This is part of the April 2013 A-Z Challenge.  Enjoy!

Green Vineyard at Ithaca

As I walk through the vineyard, I can't help but be reminded of your green smoldering eyes caressing my body. Your touch is so exquisitely delicate and full of infinite passion. I daydream of the next time your arms are around me, crushing me in a warm embrace.

I hear voices in the distance; the moans increase to a crescendo.

"Marta . . ."

"John . . ."

Recognizing your voice, I quietly walk down the path and peer through the vines. Yours eyes meet mine; her eyes also.

I whisper . . . "How could you?"

I run through the green haze and collapse in despair.

A-Z April 2013 Challenge: Sheldon L. Cooper's Fun with Flags

This is part of the April 2013 A-Z Challenge.  Enjoy!

Hello, this is Chary Perez signing in for Dr. Sheldon Cooper.  He is unavailable at the moment as Amy Farrah Fowler, his girlfriend, is holding him to the relationship agreement.

Now on to the excitement of Flag Facts.  Today's topic is the United Nations.  I have only been to this location once.  However, the sound of the flags waving in the wind is exhilarating.  Did you know that the United Federation of Planets flag is quite similar to the United Nations flag?  Here take a look:

Interesting isn't it.  Set phasers to fun!  This is Chary Perez signing off.

A-Z April 2013 Challenge: Egypt

This is part of the April 2013 A-Z Challenge.  Enjoy!

Two years ago, my friend and co-teacher, Jan traveled to Egypt with her son.  She described it as the most enlightening experience she has had to date.  She sailed on the glistening Nile River, rode a camel and gazed upon the Great Pyramids at Giza.  I envy her. I would love to experience authentic Egyptian cuisine.  Jan did caution me about the water.  Consequently, she fell ill shortly after the trip.  She said that she drank bottled water.   But, one evening she drank an alcoholic beverage containing ice.  The ice was not filtered.  Hopefully, I will not make that mistake.  :)

Happy Birthday Jan L. Scott!

A-Z April 2013 Challenge: Decadent, Delectable Desserts

This is a throwback!  I wrote it about two or three years ago, memory is a little foggy so don't quote me on that!  This is part of the April 2013 A-Z Challenge.  Enjoy!

D is a good letter.  Gotta love the A-Z Challenge. Yesterday I went to Rocco's Italian Bakery on Bleeker Street and Carmine.  This is only a six block walk from my job and I have to say well worth it.  I bought my friend/ co-worker a birthday cake since she kept saying "It's my birthday!"  Her cake was a chocolate mousse filling and buttercream frosting.  Ooh, I was so bad and had a piece but I couldn't help it.  Look . . .

Then, I had the nerve to buy a half pound of Italian cookies.  Oh the travesty . . .

After this, I spotted the red velvet cupcakes.  Between the smell of sugar sweet cookies and the waft of coffee in the air, I could not decide what to do.  My senses were bombarded with devilish temptation.  I bought the lot of them and lugged my goodies back to work.  However, I gave my children the Italian cookies so check plus for me!  I gave my youngest and my husband the red velvet cupcakes.  Has my husband eaten his cupcake?  No.  It is sitting in my fridge calling me to come hither and taste its delectable, decadent goodness.  What to do?  What to do?

*faints*

A-Z April 2013 Challenge: Citrus Fruits

This is part of the April 2013 A-Z Challenge.  Enjoy!

I long for summertime to come so I can taste the tangy citrus fruits sold in the fruit market store.  Everything is fresh and the colors so bright, I just want to devour every single sweet yielding reward.  I long for busy streets with the haze emanating from the asphalt.  I long for the children playing Double Dutch jumprope and stickball on the block.  I long for the cool spray of the fire hydrant to caress my face.  I long for the blazing Spanish music blaring from the backs of fast cars.  I long for summer.  Citrus fruit and summer.

A-Z April 2013 Challenge: Beach

This is part of the April 2013 A-Z Challenge.  Enjoy!

I long for the salt-laden air and warm breeze that caresses my sun-drenched face.  I remember when you brushed my rich brown hair from my hazel eyes and then kissed me on the beach.  Oh how we laughed and loved and danced.  I remember losing my balance but you were right there to catch me and put me straight.  I remember the spray of ocean water swirling about our feet as we tried to keep our pants from becoming drenched.  I remember the twinkle in your eyes and the melody in your laugh.

What happened to us? What went wrong?

A-Z April 2013 Challenge: Astronaut

This is part of the April 2013 A-Z Challenge.  Enjoy!

Every little girl and boy looks up at the night sky and sees a velvety blanket of diamonds.  They often wonder what is out there in that infinite ebony vacuum. At night, before bed, they sing about twinkling lights and cows over moons.  They wonder how far does that great beyond go?  They dream of floating through void and observing spinning celestial bodies.  Their curiosity looms behind those luminous eyes.  What marvels still lie in that great unknown?  Does the sun really burn?  Children question is there anyone out there?  They think, maybe we will go.  Maybe, we will see.

Back From the Future: Time Capsule

This is my entry for  M. Pax bloghop.

Premise:

You're up before dawn on a Saturday when the doorbell rings. You haven't brewed your coffee so you wonder if you imagined the sound. Plonking the half-filled carafe in the sink, you go to the front door and cautiously swing it open. No one there. As you cast your eyes to the ground, you see a parcel addressed to you ... from you.

You scoop it up and haul it inside, sensing something legitimate despite the extreme oddness of the situation. Carefully, you pry it open. Inside is a shoebox -- sent from ten years in the future -- and it's filled with items you have sent yourself.

What's in it?

I carry the package to the kitchen with trepidation.  How can this be- a package from me, to me?  Am I going mad?  What could possibly be inside this compact parcel from the future?  These thoughts race across my mind at light speed.  The magnitude and incomprehensibly implausible situation is a bit more than my limited human intellectual capabilities can process.  Gingerly, and with hesitation, I untie the twine that secures the package.  I begin to wonder if the box will contain spoilers.  Once I look at the contents, if events are revealed, they will be set and irrevocably become etched in time. I will be forced to experience these events and never be able to change my future.

My hand shakes uncontrollably as I give in to curiosity and extract the first article. It is a book, unfamiliar and quite beautiful.  It is bound in navy blue leather with silver lettering and has an intricate pattern like a wrought iron gate.  The pages, from the profile of the book, were brown with age and have a brittle appearance.  I wonder if the book is an antique.  The title is indecipherable as it is in another language, none that I am familiar with.

I place the book to the side and reach in for the next item.  It is a photograph of a black sand beach.  Turning the picture to the back, the destination is clearly labeled, "Punalu'u Beach, Hawaii."  I search the photograph for a face or shadow but none is forthcoming.  There is a turquoise blue lagoon caressing the obsidian shores of the beach.  The location gives off a feeling of tranquility and reflective calm.  I yearn to be in the photograph.

Finally, there is a note.  It is in my neat, printed handwriting.  The notepad paper states just five words, "Never give up your dreams, -C."  I smile, a big Cheshire grin and place the contents of the time capsule back into their container.  Today is the day that I begin my journey and live my dreams.
